Our group embarked on a three-day tramp around Lake Waikaremoana, one of New Zealand's renowned Great Walks. While typically completed over 3 to 4 days, we opted for a condensed itinerary due to time constraints.

Day 1: Auckland to Panekire Hut

  • Travel: Departed Auckland early, heading southeast towards Lake Waikaremoana. The journey took us through State Highway 38, which includes a 1.5-hour stretch of unsealed gravel road. Along this segment, we encountered wandering cattle and horses, necessitating cautious driving.

  • Start Point: Arrived at Onepoto Shelter, the southern trailhead of the track.

  • Ascent to Panekire Hut: The initial segment involved a steep ascent up the Panekire Bluff. The trail was challenging, with numerous switchbacks. The forest here was enchanting; trees draped in thick moss, a testament to the high humidity and elevation. Several lookout points along the ridge provided panoramic views of the lake.

  • Evening at Panekire Hut: Reached Panekire Hut in the late afternoon. The hut was well-maintained, offering basic amenities. However, due to its elevation, temperatures dropped to around 5°C at night.

Day 2: Panekire Hut to Korokoro Campsite

  • Descent to Waiopaoa Hut: After breakfast, we began our descent from the Panekire Range. The downhill trek was a welcome change, providing relief to our calves after the previous day's ascent. The trail meandered through dense forest, eventually leading us to Waiopaoa Hut, situated near the lake's edge.

  • Afternoon Trek to Korokoro Campsite: With plenty of daylight remaining, we decided to push on towards Korokoro Campsite. This section of the track differed markedly from earlier terrains, transitioning into marshlands and wetlands.

  • Korokoro Campsite: Arrived at the campsite in the early evening. After setting up, we took a brief detour to visit the nearby Korokoro Falls, a cool spot that offered a refreshing break. Given our plan for an early start the next day, we turned in shortly after dinner.

Day 3: Return to Onepoto and Drive Back to Auckland

  • Early Departure: Woke at 5 AM to begin our trek back to Onepoto. The pre-dawn hike was peaceful, with the trail illuminated by our headlamps and the emerging morning light.

  • Completion: Reached Onepoto by late morning, concluding our circuit of the lake. After a brief rest and snack, we commenced our drive back to Auckland, arriving in the evening.

Recommendations:

  • Trip Duration: While our three-day itinerary was achievable. For those looking to fully immerse themselves in the experience, a 4 to 5-day schedule is advisable. This allows for side trips, such as the walk to Korokoro Falls, and more leisurely paces between huts.

  • Fitness Level: The track features significant elevation changes, particularly the ascent to Panekire Bluff. Adequate fitness preparation is essential to handle prolonged climbs and descents comfortably.

Conclusion:

Lake Waikaremoana offers a captivating tramping experience, showcasing some of New Zealand's most pristine natural beauty. Despite our tight schedule, the journey was rewarding, filled with diverse landscapes and memorable moments. Future trampers are encouraged to allow ample time to fully appreciate all that this Great Walk has to offer.
